Health Informatics on FHIR

Overview

What we do?

With the rapid development of technology, health informatics system are now playing an essential role in supporting physicians and surgeons to make accurate diagnoses and avoid inefficient patients information. To provide clinical decision support and efficient workflow process, our team is working on the design of the Kiosk at Grady Emergency Department.

Our Goal

Create an application to be used on a computer or tablet device (or smartphone in the future). Integrate with Epic, Grady’s Electronic Medical Record System (EMR) and FHIR, allowing patients to import data from other FHIR using hospitals.

Why we do?

As one of the busiest ED’s in the nation, Grady Hospital’s Emergency Department treats adult medical, surgical, and trauma patients. There were about 40 patients per hour during peak time. However, only around 20 percent of patients have real life-threatening illness or injuries. Therefore, our primary goal of this project is to improve the efficiency of the patient information collecting process by designing a Kiosk at the waiting room. Currently, the registration process is conducted through a person on-site in the waiting room which creates extensive waiting times. We are focusing on optimizing the waiting time for patients and registration time by creating a registration kiosk that will allow the patients to register themselves, with staff only spending time to quickly verify the information. The kiosk will integrate with Epic, Grady’s Electronic Medical Record System (EMR). By using FHIR, the kiosk will also be able to retrieve records of patients that may not have specifically visited Grady before, but have visited other hospitals that also use FHIR.
